Canada continues to be one of the destination for Pakistani students due to its high-quality education and progressive post-graduation opportunities. Here are the latest university-related updates and visa changes relevant for Pakistani applicants:

Changes to Study Permit and Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

PGWP Eligibility Updates: Starting May 15, 2024, students enrolling in public-private partnership programs will no longer qualify for a PGWP. Only students attending institutions approved as Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) with PGWP-approved programs will remain eligible. Applicants are encouraged to verify their institution’s status using IRCC tools to ensure compliance with these rules

Extended PGWP for Master’s Graduates: As of February 2024, graduates of master’s programs, even those shorter than two years, may be eligible for a three-year PGWP, provided they meet all criteria. This change aims to attract more international talent to advanced research and professional fields.

Language and Field of Study Requirements: From November 2024, PGWP applicants must meet specific language proficiency benchmarks and enroll in eligible fields such as STEM, healthcare, agriculture, and trade. Programs like MBAs and general business studies are no longer eligible, urging students to carefully consider their program choices

Study Permit Application Trends

Streamlining Financial Proof: While the Student Direct Stream (SDS) has been phased out for some countries, Pakistani students can still expedite applications by demonstrating strong financial support through first-year tuition payment and a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC). Alternatives like providing detailed proof of funds and affidavits are also accepted

Application Timeline: With increasing application volumes, students are advised to apply at least six months in advance to ensure timely visa processing.

Work Opportunities for International Students

Canada now allows students to work up to 24 hours weekly during academic sessions, increasing their ability to manage expenses and gain professional experience. Provinces like Ontario and British Columbia report higher availability of part-time skilled jobs, providing students with career-aligned opportunities

.

Recommended Institutions and Regions

To enhance visa approval rates and post-graduation prospects, students are encouraged to explore universities outside high-demand regions like Ontario. Provinces such as Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Nova Scotia offer competitive programs and faster processing times for visa applications

By staying informed about these updates, Pakistani students can make strategic decisions to maximize their educational and career outcomes in Canada.
